Lateral Battle Rope Waves

Waves driven side to side rather than up and down. Loads the obliques and shoulders in the transverse plane, which most conditioning work never touches.

HOW TO DO IT
  1. 01Take an end in each hand and set an athletic stance with the hips back.
  2. 02Sweep both arms out to one side, letting the torso rotate slightly with them.
  3. 03Reverse and sweep to the other side, keeping the ropes close to hip height.
  4. 04Keep the feet planted so the rotation happens through the hips and trunk, not the knees.
  5. 05Work twenty-second intervals with equal rest, four to eight rounds.
COACHING CUES
  1. 01Rotate through the hips, keep the knees quiet.
  2. 02Wide sweep, ropes stay low.
  3. 03Stay in the squat the whole interval.
COMMON MISTAKES
  1. 01Twisting from the knees instead of the hips, which puts rotational shear through the joint.
  2. 02Letting the ropes climb toward the chest, which turns a lateral drill into a sloppy alternating wave.
  3. 03Standing up as fatigue builds, which removes the leg contribution and leaves the shoulders to fail alone.
