Contrast Walk-Down
A structured easy walk after hard training, stepping the pace down in blocks until the breath settles. Eight to twelve minutes, used to finish a session rather than stopping cold.
- 01Start walking briskly within one minute of finishing the last hard effort rather than sitting down.
- 02Walk at a firm pace for three minutes with the arms swinging and the breath through the nose where possible.
- 03Drop to a moderate pace for three minutes and let the breathing rate come down on its own.
- 04Finish with three to five minutes of slow walking, exhaling for twice as long as you inhale.
- 05Stop when the breath is conversational and the heart rate has clearly settled, then stretch or leave.
- 01Keep moving — do not sit down straight after the last set.
- 02Step the pace down in blocks, not all at once.
- 03Long exhale, short inhale, all the way to the end.
- 01Stopping dead after the last effort — blood pools in the legs and you feel worse for the next ten minutes.
- 02Walking too fast the whole time — nothing steps down and it becomes more conditioning work.
- 03Cutting it to two minutes — the breath has not settled, which is the only thing this block is for.
Note: Reference material, not a prescription. Load, volume and whether this movement suits you at all depends on your assessment — if something hurts, stop and get it looked at.
